CD Reviews

The Maria Callas of Soul
Christopher Enzi | San Francisco | 04/27/2003

"Linda Jones is my FAVORITE singer! She has a BIG voice with an emotional intensity and range that would put most trained opera singers to shame. Linda Jones was 28 when she died in 1972 and had only had two low ranked singles on the charts. The productions are kind of tinny, the background vocals aren't always in pitch. There are ants in the Grand Canyon, too. Most of these songs have been on other CDs but the transfer here is Very Nice and "I Who Have Nothing" is a fine replacement for my very worn 45 single which cost almost as much as this whole album. Buy this while you can! It's AMAZING!"
"SO SOULFUL...SHE HYPNOTIZE YOU!"

"THIS YOUNG LADY FROM NEWARK, NEW JERSEY COULD HAVE BEEN A DIVA IN SOUL MUSIC HISTORY! HOWEVER, SHE DID LEAVE HER MARK. "HYPNOTIZED", "WHAT HAVE I DONE", "YOUR PRECIOUS LOVE", AND "I'LL BE SWEETER TOMMORROW (THAN I WAS YESTERDAY"; LINDA HAD A VOICE THAT HAD AN "EVIL" RANGE! ALOT OF THE MATERIAL PRESENTED TO HER WAS FROM SMALL, FLEDGING, INDEPENDENT RECORD LABELS. SHE NEVER REALLY HAD A CHANCE TO SHOW MAINSTREAM SOUL LISTENERS, SHE COULD SING ALA: ARETHA, GLADYS, NATALIE, AND CHAKA! SHE'S UP THERE IN "SOUL HEAVEN." NOT WITH THOSE MORE MEMORABLE...BUT, SHE'S THERE JUST THE SAME. "A TRUE GODSEND"...LINDA JONES.""

"Despite the (alleged) prestige of including a David Nathan essay, "The Greatest Hits" is a disappointing compilation of the late R&B/Soul singer's work.

First, the track listing (both on the back cover and booklet) is incorrect; there are 21 tracks, but they are completely different order than what the track listing reads. As seen below, it turns out that the tracks are arranged on the disc in alphabetical order.

The recording dates are not provided in the booklet (nor is any other information - producer, album, chart positions - other than songwriter credits), other than the partial information provided within the text of the essay. And if that is not enuff, despite being "remastered", the sound quality is less than stellar.
