CD Reviews

Easily the most overlooked band of the 90s

(5 out of 5 stars)

"I've been missing out on Levitation for the past 10 years due to my stupid mistake of not picking this up used when I first saw the amazing collage style cover art on this album. The artwork alone should have peaked my interest enough to just buy it. I jotted down some notes and looked up a review on the album on Allmusic only to find a very non descript blurb about how they had "pop-like melodies with heavy guitars."

With so many bands out there and even more today, how the hell was I supposed to know that these guys weren't Nirvana clones? Another thing that is annoying is that mp3's are next to impossible to find for anything that they've ever done. Well I should have done my homework and known by their band name (coming from Hawkwind's Levitation) that this wasn't your run of the mill band.

In England maybe these guys had a few critics and fans on their side but unfortunately I think that might have been it. The States I don't think had a clue about the mighty Levitation but what's new? I did read a critic's review just recently who said that you can have your Spacemen 3's and your A.R. Kanes cuz Levitation blows them away. I would have to disagree with this since Levitation doesn't sound like either band but more importantly that Levitation is who they are.

No one sounds quite like them and that's the beauty of it. Imagine the spaciness of Hawkwind or Spacemen 3, the powerful drumming/guitarwork of Swervedriver or even Loop combined with the melodies of say Slowdive and vocals along the lines of House of Love which the vocalist Terry Bickers was once a major part of. Then take all of these elements and make them into something so unique that you can't quite place them into any category and you've got Levitation. Another thing that is mindblowing is that 4 of the 8 tracks on this album are live but these live tracks are so well done that you'd think that they were studio recordings. For all fans of prog, pop, space, and other unique forms of music! Buy NOW!"
