CD Reviews

Wonderful performances of a contemporary composer

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Naxos has other Balada discs each equally exciting. I would never have heard of Balada were I not such a devoted fan of Naxos. The four works on this CD are all first recodings. The two concertos are the centerpieces but the Celebratio and passacaglia for orchestra are both exciting. Altoughh born in Spain, Balada was educated in New York. Two of the main themes of is works are inclusion of Spanish gypsy an African American spirituals and jazz. The cello conerto in two movement employs jazz in its style but the concerto is wholly modern.

My favorite on this Cd is the oncerto for four guitars whose middle movement uses harsh pecussion and winds often obltorating the guitars. Harsh and starly beatiful the conerto is b alanced by the less demaning outer movements. Please excuse typos i have a neurologic disease"
