CD Reviews

Music From 'The Wild One' in Two Versions.
William R. Tweed | 03/11/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"There are two recorded versions of the music from the Marlon Brando film, 'The Wild One'. One version played by Shorty Rogers and His Orchestra, the other played by Leith Stevens' All-Stars. This CD has them both. You can decide for yourself which version is from the film. I think it's the Leith Stevens version.

Anyway, the Rogers band plays on four cuts: The Wild One, Blues for Brando, Windswept, and Chino. The Stevens group plays those same four tunes, plus six others from the film.

In addition to those cuts, there are ten tunes, also composed by Stevens, from the film 'Private Hell 36', starring Ida Lupino, Steve Cochran, and Howard Duff. A film noir detective story filmed in 1954.

Modern West-Coast jazz from the 1950s, with the distinctive sound of Leith Stevens. Good sound quality. Nice, informative twelve-page booklet in a jewel-box case. All in all, a very nice production of this hard to get material.

Just on warning. If you are going to play this CD in the car, be careful. This is music to drive fast by.
