Synopsis

Album Description
The brilliant American flutist Laurel Ann Maurer returns to 4Tay with another wonderful collection of New American Music - this time celebrating the American Woman Composer. Selections by Libby Larsen, Claire Polin, Gladys Nordenstrom, Gwyneth Walker and Vivian Fine represent a superb cross-section of American musical thinking from the latter half of the 20th Century. New works by Marie Barker Nelson and Jennifer Higdon, both written for Laurel Ann Maurer, point a strong direction for the instrument's future. An important addition to the recorded legacy of American Music, presented by the woman whom Julius Baker called "one of our outstanding and gifted flutists." Sensitive piano accompaniment by Joanne Pearce Martin.

CD Reviews

Excellent Contemporary Music!
Harry Goldhagen | 02/06/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Over the years I have heard and recorded much of what is called "Contemporary Classical Music," from the awful and laughable to the extraordinary and transcendent. This CD, which I helped to record in live performance at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, falls into the latter category. It is one of the most pleasing, stimulating, and broad-ranging collections I have heard in a long time. Ms. Maurer has assembled a stellar group of composers, some of whom wrote these pieces for the performer. My favorites include the lyrical "Songs of the Moon" by Marie Barker Nelson, whose symphonies have been performed in NY and around the world, and the exciting and energetic title track, Legacy by Jennifer Higdon, a rising star in contemporary composition. You are in for a real treat with this CD!"
