Synopsis

Album Description
Lee Murdock celebrates another landmark with the release of his tenth CD, The Lost Lake Sailors, a collection of songs that speak to the sailing spirit in all of us. "The Lost Lake Sailors theme encompasses much more than the obvious shipwreck analogy," says Murdock. "There are many ways for a sailor to be lost, not just lost at sea. Yes, people are fascinated by shipwrecks, but these songs also tell of sailors lost from the pages of history, lost in their career, lost in spirit, or maybe just missing from the passenger manifest, as with the black sailors who worked on the Great Lakes ships during the late nineteenth century." Those familiar with Murdock's work always anticipate the ghost story, and the new CD does not disappoint. SAINT MARTIN ISLAND is a new Murdock original with a haunting melody about a lighthouse keeper on Green Bay, and the CD also premieres a new song by Milwaukee songwriter Larry Penn about a haunted shipwreck in Lake Michigan (WHEN THE WILLIE WENT DOWN). Sure to be a favorite on this CD is THE MERMAID OF ONTARIO, a humorous rhyming song written by the late Shel Silverstein, another popular songwriter who loved the seas. Silverstein often visited the Ohio island of Put-in-Bay, where he penned a few songs about the Great Lakes.

CD Reviews

"Sailors' is fresh and hearty
Bob Janis | Pittsburgh, PA | 02/03/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Lee Murdock's 'Lost Lakes Sailors is his tenth and quite possibly best recording of Great Lakes music and lore. The songs are fresh and hearty, with exuberance blending incredibly well with first class muscianship and vocals. The production is solid and the song selection superb. Lee is not only a masterful songwriter but he also has a rare talent for finding songs that fit his robust singing style. The songs come to life in a startling way. One can feel cold spray splashing the face and smell warm tar under a hot sun as a Great Lakes schooner slices through blue waters. Lee's tribute to the sailors who have been lost on the Great Lakes or who continue to ply their trade on its unforgiving waters is a must for any maritime music lover."
A Great Lakes Treasure That Must Be Heard!

"Lee Murdock is the True Balladeer of the Great Lakes. In the tradition of Gordon Lightfoot's Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Mr. Murdock takes the tales of the Great Lakes several steps further. Having the honor of hearing him perform live, his CD's bring that live quality right into your home or car. His music can bring you to tears in a heartbeat, and in a few verses have you smile as the story unfolds as smooth as a pond on a lazy afternoon. The best part of it all is so many of the ballads he writes are based on fact. I now have four of his CD's and every one is a treasure of the Great Lakes."
