CD Reviews

A true find!! Great latino sounds!
07/21/1999
(4 out of 5 stars)

"If you like Spanish flamenco with a flare - you'll love Lara & Reyes. As a personal friend of Joe (Reyes) - his music is just like him - sophisticated, cool, laid-back, with a subtle undercurrent of passion throughout! If you like Paco DeLucia - this is more upbeat. Not quite as clean and crisp as Strunz & Farah - but every bit as enjoyable. Take yourself for a great indulgent listening experience and take along Joe & Sergio on a road trip. Trust me - you'll think you've gotten there too soon!"

"I saw them in concert in San Antonio. They are awesome"
Pure Relaxation

(4 out of 5 stars)

"It might be tempting to say that Lara and Reyes are Strunz and Farah clones, but that would not be entirely accurate. True, they play similar styles, but Sergio Lara and Joe Reyes have been playing like this for a long time and their music is a reflection of the culture of their base in San Antonio.

I have owned Guitarras Hermanas since its issue, and despite the fact that I own thousands of CDs, I still find time for an occasional listen to this. This music is pure relaxation. I like it from start to finish. Eight compositions by either Lara, Reyes, or both are bracketed by the Mexican standard Sabor A Mi and the perhaps less familiar Atahualpa Yupanqui composition, Viene Clareando. Every song is very listenable, there isn't a single one that I dread hearing. I knock one star off only because there isn't anything which really makes the CD stand out. Additionally, the liner notes are a little sparse.

Being the local fixtures that they are, I have taken the opportunity to see these guys live on several occasions and believe me, they can really set the night on fire. If you are a nuevo flamenco fan and you order this CD, you'll see what I mean."
