The death of cool....
Liz | Kohler, WI, USA | 05/21/2002
(5 out of 5 stars)

""when i'm with you i'm the ocean, float within me..
when i look at you your brilliant smile stops time; intoxicates me... i can lose myself in moments of you, nothing ripples, nothing sways, this tender love feeds my days, damn these foolish childish ways...
what use are these words? what use are these lips? my lips only melt on yours, i can't trust these waves to float me, i can't trust the moon that shines on you... but when i'm with you i'm the ocean, when i'm with you i come home.."

immagine these metaphoracally beautiful lyrics blended with hypnotic base lines, haunting, flowing guitar riffs, caressing notes of a saxaphone, and the overall feeling that you could close your eyes and picture yourself under a starry sky on a beach with moonbeams on the water.......
"the death of cool" is, in my mind, the epitome of the kitchens sound. as far as "love is hell" goes, i have that one also and i am rather fond of it. however, it is their earliest release and i'm tempted to say that at that point they had not yet settled into their unmistakable style.
basically what i'm trying to say is, if you are going to collect Kitchens cd's, start with "death of cool" and "strange free world" (my 2nd fav.)then when you fall in love with them, move on to "love is hell" and "cowboys and aliens".
i cannot compare Kitchens with anyone except ... i've always thought that the vocals of the psychedelic furs and Kitchens sounded very similar...but that is for you to find out!
if you like 80's new wave and similar alternative styles, you will probably love Kitchens of Distinction."

"I agree w/ Paz. I too remember the "good old days" of alternative music when it really used to be different than the regular pop that's overplayed, overdone and overproduced nowadays. "Strange Free World" is possibly my favorite album of all time, well except for possibly the "Substance" album from New Order, or perhaps "Strangeways Here We Come" :)
O for the old days of discontent w/ the mainstream, everything
sounds like Limp Bizkit.

Hang on to your vinyl, BD"
80's best in one album

"Every time I listen to "Love Is Hell" can't avoid to think that it is a perfect blend between The Cure, The Jesus And Mary Chain and Echo & The Bunnymen. This album with its influences is a perfect example of why the 80's alternative music was so great."
