CD Reviews

Traditional Style Roots & Rocksteady
D. KNIGHT | Radlett - Herts UK | 03/26/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The latest King Django LP is pretty similar to the stuff he did with the Stubborn Allstars. Laid back, rootsy, ska rocksteady rhythms, which on first listening strike you as good without being brilliant, but if you give them a chance they REALLY grow on you. You've GOT to stick with it and listen a couple of times - if you do you'll be very glad.

King Django is a talented songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, with a deep love of Jamaican music - all that makes for a tasty fusion.

I've listened to this a few times now - and as is often the case KJ (or KJ related) stuff - when I first played it I thought it was ok, but nothing exceptional. Slowly, and nonetheless VERY surely, its sheer infectious rhythm starts to get you. You end up loving it. It's one of things that works equally well on heady Saturday night, or a chilled Sunday morning.

"Fat German Bastard" Dr Ring Ding makes a guest appearance too. Quality.

Why King Django isn't better known to the wider ska/roots/riddim buying public is a complete mystery to me. I'm in England and this CD isn't even available unless in this country!

Check it out."
