CD Reviews

Kim Simmonds bare bones!
Bluematter | Colorado | 06/27/2001
(5 out of 5 stars)

"What we have here is a true accoustic blues set by a master guitar player. This CD is a continuation of Savoy Brown's "Slow Train" experiment. Kim plays with passion in an all accoustic performance with a little help from his friends. Dave Hall on piano as an example. This introspective work took two years to complete and is dedicated to former bandmate, and leader of Foghat, Lonesome Dave. If your looking for that electric sound of Savoy Brown, go and get the excellent last CD "The Blues keep me holding On". But, if your wanting to kick back and listen to some amazing licks on the accoustic guitar, then this CD is a must. Perhaps Kim will consider getting the boys all together from Lonesome Dave's period with Kim and crank out some of Dave's blues numbers on a true celebration of his contribution to rock & roll blues. Tunes like "Feel so Bad", "It hurts me Too", and "Louisana Blues" among others deserve another play. It would be great to get Chris Youldin and Co. back together along with Nathanial Peterson and Rod Price as well. Whatever happens, rock and roll blues fans should appreciate what Kim is doing and give this new effort a listen."

"Savoy Brown's Kim Simmonds releases his second solo acoustic CD in 4 years and it is evey bit as good as the first. All songs on the CD are originals penned and performed by Simmonds. The lyrics are well written but, according to Simmond's, not autobiographical. On this CD, which tends to lean strongly toward country blues, Simmond's is assisted on various tracks by Bob Hall on piano (Savoy Brown) as well as bassist Pat DeSalvo and drummer Garnet Grimm. While there is nothing here to make this CD standout from the pack of other country blues CD's released in the last couple of years, Simmonds certainly would be in the top 20. Overall, a decent effort."
