CD Reviews

Loggins is a genius
sibontot | Jakarta, INDONESIA | 06/02/2005

"I was never a big fan of Loggins. But then a friend of mine recommended me to buy this album. Lo and behold, I become addicted to listening this album and later on I bought Loggins other albums. This album outstands and able to deliver messages about relationship (personal or not) in depth, well, at least I got the message clearly. I'm very much impressed with Loggins. He's musically talented and yes, a genius. Can't argue more."
Loggins' big masterpiece

"After recording hit movie songs and hit songs from movies that bombed. Loggins returned to this album which should be considered a classic.
Gone are the synthsized sounds of his earlier work he is venturing towards more traditional sounds (something his good friend Michael McDonald, who also turns up here failed to do in the 1990s.
1. Will of the Wind- Will Ackerman, get it? A good album opener described as "a prayer".
2. Leap of Faith- The title tune which is one of a few songs on this album that was written about his relationship with Julia Cooper who he would marry three years later. Smokey Robinson even makes a cameo!
3. The Real Thing- Written when his daughter was to be christened but then something unexpected happened...
4. Conviction of the Heart- The unofficial anthem of the envorimental movement (as Al Gore later put it)
5. If You Believe- A great spirited number written during the Loggins & Messina days (the chorus part only though) The introduction features Sheryl Crow and Ruth Pointer of the Pointer Sisters.
6. I Would Do Anything- A duet with Sheryl Crow which Kenny describes as a love song to love itself.
7. Sweet Reunion- Another number written for Julia. As he describes it in the UNIMAGINABLE LIFE book he wrote it on his first date. Makes me swoon every time I hear it.
8. Now or Never- Described as being like Loggins' earlier hit "This is It". A man is in crisis and doesn't know what to do with his life. Michael McDonald appears along with his wife Amy Holland and sister Maureen Ferguson (although he didn't co-write the song, it was written with Guy Thomas who he also wrote "Conviction" and "Leap of Faith" with)
9. My Father's House- Dedicated to his late father rather dull
10. Cody's Song- Later re-recorded on Return to Pooh Corner and on the long out of print Kathie Lee Gifford CD Dreamship (1995) (didn't she know it was about his son Cody though?) Nice string arrangement.
11. Will of the Wind- Instrumental version by Japanese bamboo flute master Kazu Matsui.
12. Too Early for the Sun- A perfect way to end a great album"
A Masterpiece ... A Gem ... A Must

"It's not easy for a talented songwriter to let go of his chart-topping formula and take on a new direction, and most of those who got the courage to try ended up realizing that after all they weren't gifted enough to suceed.

But Kenny Loggins did it, and he did it well.

This album demonstrated the best in songwriting, arrangement, musicianship and recording.

At least I love it so much that I took the trouble and time to write something about the album ... while I'm busy listening to it ..."
