Kelli Williams's talent has come of age with her third release, In the Myx. With a professional singing career that began at age 10, and more than 100 opening performances for CeCe Winans's 1996 tour, Williams has paid her dues. Now she has brought a unique and bold style into the circle of elite gospel talent. In the Myx presents an urban pop landscape in full bloom. The bombastic aggression of "Remyx Me," the exalted groove of "Bustin' Loose," and the balmy gentleness of "Crazy for You" push the boundaries of what one would expect to hear in this genre. Over the top of it all, Williams declares her faith unabashedly. On the title track she sings: "That's where I want to be / Caught up in the myx of your will." Obviously, Williams's adventurous nature has put her right into the middle of it.

The Future of Christian R&B

"This is the kind of cd that i like to hear,I think that right off hand, I will compare this to some of the tracks that Missy Elliot has sung on in the past. A lot of futuristic and totally off the wall beats appear here. The 1st track on the album is a remake of an old Tramaine Hawkins tune "Fall Down". It took me a minute to get used to this but it is very nice, the same goes for the title track. The song "In the Myx" is sooooo smooth, but Tonex's rapping on here has nothing to do with the rest of the song, I'll be waiting for the single to come out with a remix and a track without the rap. Speaking of rap, the other track with a rap (Over and Over) featuring Gibraan, who didn't even get recognized in the credits, is really cool. He sounds like he should be in ruff ryders or mobb deep, w/o sounding just like them, thank God. Like with any Tonex produced album, neo soul appears here in the form of "Crazy for You", "Older", and some other tracks. I hear a lot of techno and industrial infuuences on this album too, like on "Bustin' Loose" and "Remyx Me", was someone listening to NIN or Circle of Dust? Hmmmmmmm. This stuff, overall, is quality enough to be played on both Christian and secular radio stations and I wish Kelli and Tonex the best of success. Her vocals, by the way are in top form, while she used to be all about inspirational/adult contemporary, that image mostly shows up in the song "Temple", and that even has a Mary Mary/Yolanda Adams style talk box voice overdub in some parts. Let's just say that she has come a long way from the little girl that used to sing at all of the Adventist functions like Oakwood alumni weekends, conferences and Camp Meetings. Hey, why are you still reading this review? Buy the album!"
