CD Reviews

A must have for any DJ who needs old vinyl classics on CD!

(3 out of 5 stars)

"I must admit, all of Kano's music is not all that great. However any DJ will tell you that some of these classics are virtually impossible to find on compact disk. Two in particular from this disc are some of the most sought after dance classics of the early 80's ( I'm Ready) and (Holly Dolly) both of which are in their original full 12" versions. For those DJ's on a budget, forget it; Pick This Up Now! Having these classics in your library in digital is well worth it!"

"This is one of the better greatest hits compilations that I have heard in sometime. Basically, all the songs featured are solid and more importantly far ahead of their time. Remember, Kano was an early to mid 80's dance music performers. I have New York Cake on vinyl, the tracks "Can't hold back", "She's a star", "Baby not tonight" and "Don't try to stop me" are strong. However, the recording is short. I wanted to here more, the greatest hits compilation provided that. This musical act put in a great deal of time and concentrated effort, you can expect a tribute web site from me to them for all they have accomplished. A musical act [s] might want to release a tribute recording as the vast majority of these tarcks could blend in rather well with today's music. Regardless of timeframe, there ia always a place for disco dance music. Kano is a good, solid musical act, I would really enjoy hearing Stardust remake Kano's music, respectfully, Doug."
Slightly Disappointed

"Having enjoyed much of Kano's music when it was originally released in the early 1980's, I was excited to find that it was (finally) available in the CD format. Unfortunately the title "Greatest Hits" is a misnomer as the album contains their ENTIRE first album titled "KANO", four songs from 1983 which were not released in the US, and the B-side (Holly Dolly) to the huge hit 12" single "I'm Ready" (remember those)(p.s. for any of you to young to know this, at least 2 rap hits were recorded using large samples from "I'm Ready"). Although I enjoyed hearing most of that music clear of the hissing and popping of a dusty stylus for the first time, I am VERY disappointed that this collection contains NOTHING from their second (1981) US release "NEW YORK CAKE", which I feel was a better album than "KANO" from beginning to end in spite of not having a killer hit such as "I'M READY". Three of the four songs songs on this CD not from the "KANO" album are from the album "Another Life", which was not released in the US. That album is very good as it features more powerful vocals than their previous music. Although these songs are obviously created with more use of a synthesizer, they do have a richer sound than Kano's first two albums. (for all of you "old school DJ's, there aren't many breaks in them with which to mix 'n' scratch) I only wish I could have enjoyed them when they were originally released in 1983 because I like them, but now their arrangement seems a bit dated."
