Soft, seductive, fifties romance

"This latest twofer from EMI in Britain pairs two of Julie's earliest albums - Lonely girl from 1956 and Make love to me from 1957. Julie is often compared to Peggy Lee and Jeri Southern and it's not difficult to see why. They were all brilliant singing (at times almost whispering) late-night romantic songs of the kind with which this twofer is filled - there are no uptempo songs here. I love all three of these wonderful ladies and have most of their available music.On this particular twofer (as on many of Julie's albums), you will find plenty of covers of songs from the Great American Songbook. Perhaps the most famous song here is Fools rush in, but Lover man, Body and soul, Where or when, The nearness of you, You're my thrill and others have been covered by plenty of singers down the years. I believe Julie's versions of these songs are among the best, if not actually the best. If you are mainly familiar with Julie's sixties music, I must tell you that her fifties music was much sparser and more intimate - and therefore, to my ears, even better, though not everybody will share that view. This is an outstanding twofer - the latest in a great series. If you enjoy Julie's music as much as I do, you'll never be able to get enough of it."

"This is a great two on one issue from EMI (UK) but it is such a shame that they left off one track from 'Lonely Girl' the original release (and the Italian semi-bootleg cd release) both included the song 'What'll I Do' so why is it not here?
Otherwise I would of given it a FIVE STAR rating."

Whats with the Mono??

"I absolutely adore everything Julie London ever recorded. Even when her renditions were rather cheesy (her arrangers are to blame for that, particularly that AWFUL rendition of "You Don't Have To Be a Baby To Cry"), her talent was extraordinary. In the case of the two albums featured on this 2-fer, everything is sublime from start to finish, and is a testament to how elegant and classy pop music was once upon a time.

The problem is that this 2-fer (and a few others of Julie's albums) only offer us the mono editions of these two albums. This is very dissapointing because both albums were given re-channeled stereo releases not long after the original mono editions were released. But that can be a tricky thing - the so-called "re-channeled" albums from the late 1950s, 1960s, and even the 1970s were, on occasion, albums that were originally recorded in mono that were put into "fake stereo", i.e. "duophonic" sound where the mono source was simply "split" between the left and right channels via a quick echo effect that is barely audible to the human ear.

All of this is trivial next to the real oddity of this 2-fer: for some reason the powers-that-be have omitted Julie London's divine rendition of "What'll I Do" taken from the "Lonely Girl" album, a number clearly listed on the re-produced album sleeve's back cover. I have no doubt that some legal issue is to blame for this, and perahaps EMI on the U.K. side was not given permission to re-release it.

Whatever the case, these albums are both jewels of the 1950s. Aside from the few things I've nit-picked, I highly reccomend them."

"These Julie London CD's are quite adequate for those faithful London fans. "Lonely Girl" is reminicent of her early recordings with small jazz combos, while "Make Love To Me" finds Julie with a full orchestra, and provides the listener a higher level of recording, which makes her diction much clearer."
