Synopsis

These early Handel oratorio recordings were pioneering versions in their day, but they have been completely superseded by more modern performances. Although the chorus and orchestra sound hopelessly dated by today's standards, they did often feature superb casts, and here we have the young Martina Arroyo singing, if not idiomatically, at all events very beautifully. So fans of the singers may still have an interest. Others should pass. --David Hurwitz

CD Reviews

Mary Davenport is my choice!
Mitchell E. Cohen | Virginia | 03/03/2000
(3 out of 5 stars)

"I studied with Mary Davenport in the early 80's while studying at Boston University. No woman I have ever met had such a voice. She sings with such clarity and her diction is impeccable. True, this recording does not do justice to the performers or the piece, but it wasn't done yesterday either. It is a mediocre recording of great performers singing a beautiful piece."
A great recording of the 1960s

"I thought that this recording was going to be one of the worst recordings of a Handel oratorio judging form the reviews until i sat down and listened. It is a beautifully performed example of Handel performance of the 1960s nothing to be ashamed of and the soloists are excellent. They sing with an outward projection of expression with good coloratura and even natural trills. Jan Peerce was most surprising as he sounds youthful with a ringing voice and good style when he is at the end of his long career. Remember he was one of the founding members of the Bach Aria Group in the 1950s. Mary Davenport has a smooth beautifully controlled mezzo and then there is the glorious Martina Arroyo at the start of her international career with a sumptuous soprano that adds real vocal quality and style to the Baroque--- something that not all baroque sopranos are able to accomplish since they simply do not have the natural gorgeous voice that Arroyo brought to all of her interpretations. Again Arroyo sang Handel,Monteverdi and Mozart at the beginning of career before Verdi and even Wagner at the Met. David Smith sings his arias with a fine bass baritone worthy of the company. Lawrence Avery reveals his experience as an accomplished oratorio and concert artist. Sherman leads a lively performance that brings to life the score eliciting a fine performance from the Vienna State Opera Orchestra and the Vienna Academy Chorus.[[ASIN:B000001K4L Handel: Judas Maccabaeus]"
