Synopsis

Album Description
A Funk Classic Remastered With Bonus Tracks Jet magazine called him "one of rhythm & blues? most influential musicians." With a career spanning 40 years, Johnny "Guitar" Watson had success with blues, R&B and jazz. But his commercial and artistic apex came with his late ?70s and early ?80s funk recordings. Shout! Factory is proud to present three deluxe new editions of his classic funk albums ? Ain?t That A Bitch, A Real Mother For Ya and Funk Beyond The Call Of Duty ? as part of an ongoing series in 2005 and early 2006. Previously Unreleased Bonus Tracks 8. Can You Handle It 9. Virginia?s Pretty Funky Funk Beyond The Call Of Duty, released the same year as A Real Mother For Ya , was his most hard-edged release to date. Not only were the grooves more intense, but he also upped the quotient of gritty blues guitar soloing. Despite being released so close to A Real Mother, the album managed to make it to #20 on the Black Albums chart and the lower reaches of the Pop chart.

CD Reviews

Funking above and beyond the call of duty
aL | Melbourne, Australia | 10/06/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Hot on the heels of the success of his previous two albums (they both went gold), Johnny 'Guitar' Watson dropped another 70's funk classic. I'd heard this wasn't as good as the previous two but I'd say its my favourite Johnny 'Guitar' Watson cd so far, there are more grooves on this one and less ballads. Watson wrote , preformed, and produced, this and played all the instruments except for drums and horns. For fans of 70's funk music that want an introduction to one of the genre's lesser known master's, 'Funk Beyond the Call of Duty' is the perfect introduction. After all, this is: FUNK BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY."
CLASSIC FUNK FROMTHE 70'S

"JOHNNY GUITAR WATSON HAD A LONG AND PROLIFIC, IF A BIT OVERLOOKED CAREER. HE PLAYED A LOT OF GREAT MUSIC FROM THE EARLY 50'S RIGHT UP UNTIL THE TIME HE DROPPED DEAD ONSTAGE IN JAPAN MANY YEARS LATER. THIS ALBUM IS FROM THE "FUNK" STAGE OF HIS CAREER, CIRCA 1977. AND IT IS ONE OF HIS BEST. FRANK ZAPPA ONCE DESCRIBED JOHNNY'S GUITAR PLAYING AS SOUNDING "LIKE AN ICEPICK IN THE FOREHEAD", AND THE DESCRIPTION FITS. AND ETTA JAMES CREDITS HER STYLE OF SINGING FROM LISTENING TO JOHNNY GUITAR. THIS ALBUM IS JUST ONE MORE REASON HE IS THE GANGSTER OF LOVE!"
Very tasty!
