CD Reviews

"Mr. Jim is a push-over fan ~ Johnny Cash"
J. Lovins | Missouri-USA | 05/27/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Varese has released "Greatest!", a truly essential collection of recordings from the "Man in Black" on the Sun Record label from 1955 to 1958. Such a diverse entertainer who has been right up there since walking into Sam Phillips' Sun Studios in 1955. Johnny has taken many forms with his music, but thanks to him we have many fond memories that blend Bluegrass, Country, Gospel and yes, even Outlaw Country. One of my favorite Gene Autry songs is "GOODBYE LITTLE DARLIN", remember Gene singing while ridin' the range on his horse Champion ~ but Cash takes it a step further with his convincing matter-of-fact attitude loaded with style. Varese takes us back with songs "FOOLS HALL OF FAME" (originally unissued on Sun), "HEY GOOD LOOKIN' (originally unissued undubbed master), "I FORGOT TO REMEMBER TO FORGET"(originally unissued undubbed master), "ROCK AND ROLL RUBY" (originally unissued on Sun) ~ not only that we have three Hank Williams tunes "YOU WIN AGAIN", "HEY GOOD LOOKIN'" and "I COULD NEVER BE ASHAMED OF YOU", as the "Man in Black" puts his signature sound on every syllable.Total Time: 33:36 on 16 Tracks ~ Varese 302-066-442-2 ~ (5/06/2003)"
