CD Reviews

John Berry wishes you a Merry Christmas!
DanD | 12/07/2003
(4 out of 5 stars)

"John Berry is perhaps one of the greatest--and underestimated--of the 90s country singers. His voice is unique--it catches notes that few can, and woos you in ways you could never hope to explain. John Berry is a rarity, in other words, and its great to have his love for Christmas featured on this live CD.Some of the classics on this CD, such as "O Come All Ye Faithful," "Let It Snow," "I'll Be Home For Christmas," and "The Lord's Prayer" shine like they never have before. Others, such as "Little Drummer Boy," "The Christmas Song," "WInter Wonderland," and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" are good, but there are better versions out there."My Heart is Bethlehem," written by Michael Peterson, is a good new Christmas tune; "Christmas Morning," co-written by Berry, doesn't fare so well. And "O Come Emanuel" seems rather awkard, if I do say so myself. All in all, though, this CD is a moving Christmas CD, featuring some autobiographical introductions by Berry that relate you to this singer. And no, I have not forgotten "O Holy Night." Berry's studio-rendition of this song is classic; as such, his live version is outstanding. The minute-and-a-half of applause at the end of the song tells you just how good it is.So, "O Holy Night Live" is John Berry belting out his favorite Christmas tunes. This is a CD that is guaranteed to put you in the Christmas spirit...but don't try to sing along, please. I don't mean to offend you...it's just that no one can ever hope to sing like John Berry!"
