CD Reviews

Exciting!
Musicus | Oslo, Norway | 05/23/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"It is good news that these gems are reissued as a Double Decca. The works are really good: I find op. 51 younger and fresher than most of Brahm's works. Op. 34 and 67 feel more opulent. The no-nonsense interpretations of the Takacs Quartet are really engaging, interpretations with lots of energy, very exciting, wonderful drive. The sound is somehow big, lush, resonant. I've had these in more than ten years now and am not going to have any other recordings of these wonderful works. A double to a nice price which really is a bargain.

PS: I know the Borodin quartet on the same works; the Borodins go only for beauty, not exciting at all."
