Synopsis

Album Description
"Plenty of passion...a vocal expressiveness absolutely perfect for this music." -- Gramophone "What is spare and tragic on the cello becomes lush and delirious on the harp...Drake revealed an unexpected facet of a multifaceted piece of music." -- Milwaukee Journal Sentinel "A lot of art and technique on display ... the sonatas emerge gracefully from Victoria Drake's skillful hands and fingers." -- Stereo Review No one has ever before recorded these complete works on the harp! Recorded by Grammy Award-winning producer/engineer Adam Abeshouse. Bach wrote the solo cello suites between 1717 and 1720. They were largely forgotten after his death until the thirteen-year-old Pablo Casals turned up an edition in a tiny music shop in Barcelona and began to learn them. Only fifty years later (1937-39) did he record them and make them famous again. Another forty years passed until a young harp student, Victoria Drake, went to study in France. Unsatisfied with the limited repertoire for her instrument, she undertook transcriptions of all the Bach cello suites for harp, and after twenty-five years more, she has recorded them. It has been a process with a history of almost three hundred years! Drake has performed as soloist with over a dozen notable orchestras in the New York area. As recital soloist, she has appeared in series across the country, from Los Angeles to New York, as well as in Israel and France. She also performs in a duo with flutist David Fedele. Drake has recorded chamber music on a number of prestigious labels, as well as three previous solo recordings on Well-Tempered Productions. She has also performed extensively for soundtracks and commercials, and in several Broadway shows. Detailed liner notes include a pictorial timeline showing the history of the recording.

"After purchasing Victoria Drake's "Bach:Cello Suites" and enjoying it tremendously, I have gone back to get three more for gifts. Bach and harp--it doesn't get any better than that!
