CD ReviewsWho needs Jimmy Buffett when we have Jim Turner? Kevin Amorim, Newsday | Long Island, NY | 10/21/2001 (5 out of 5 stars) ""Ocean People" washes ashore as a good-natured grab bag of blues, reggae and country in island-paradise mode. And after a few listens, one's eyes are sure to burn from the late night-early morning bar smoke. So grab a coupla cold ones, sit back and get all squinty like.
Although singing-songwriting-harmonica-playing vet Turner is stationed on the East End, his heart sometimes wanders (the bluesy shuffle of "Goin' Back Down to Georgia" and country swagger of ""Goin' Back Down South Again"). But he heads back home on "East End Smokey Bars," picking in his best B.B. King homage. Turner gets Rasta-crazy, too: The jam of "Om Jah" wafts like a vacation in the islands. If you like that, you'll love his conga-driven, Beat-flavored spoken-sung "I Think I'm in Love." Pretty cool, man." |
