CD ReviewsORANGE preview Bystander | Golden State | 12/26/2009 (5 out of 5 stars) "For those of you new to the music of Jim Campilongo, you won't find a better place to start than right here with ORANGE. For those of you who are already fans, prepare yourself to be amazed. Backburner - Follows the tradition of his hard-hitting album openers, but he's never opened more aggressively. Awful Pretty, Pretty Awful - Upbeat and happy, guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Blues for Roy - A tribute to his main man, it simmers and bubbles to a full boil. No Expectations - Slow bluesy cover of a Stones classic. I'm Helen Keller and You're a Waffle Iron - Has that American Hips kind of vibe to it, but with more of a bad-a** attitude. Orange - An unexpected acoustic treat, a first for a Jim Campilongo album... a real surprise and just beautiful. Chelsea Bridge - Invokes images Jim's noir-ish Brooklyn existence. Fingerpuppet - The longest cut on the album, this is Jim's magnum opus and an absolute crusher... turn it up LOUD. Because You Like Trombone - Another acoustic surprise, very pretty. I've Got Blisters On My Fingers - Jim gets funky, very cool. Huckleberry - Another beautiful melody, has a nice country feel to it. No Fun - Eeery and spooky, strangest Stooges cover you'll ever hear. Maceo - And yet another beautiful melody, very nice again. When You Wish Upon a Star - If Orange was a movie, this would be the perfect closing song as the credits roll by. In addition to all this, Anton Fier's production results in crisp, clear sound from start to finish. The songs just flow into one another and fully demonstrate Jim's versatility and talent. Magrini | 02/27/2010 (5 out of 5 stars) "i recently read an interview with campilongo in "vintage guitar mag," i had never heard of him before, but he referenced several of my guitar heroes and named the albums he was listening to when psyching up to make the "orange" release - and yes, the quirky, cool, funky, soulful aspects of jeff beck's guitar on "blow by blow" are evident in this release. however, this is not to say campilongo copies beck, rather he channels certain aspects of beck's vibe. in all truth, campilango is more versitile than beck - his atkins-like rendition of "awful pretty, pretty awful," is absolutely amazing. so, one could say that campilongo manages to channel the spirits of many great guitarists, all of whom delightfully haunt this album, and yet he's able to forge an original and signiture style that's all his own. on several of the tracks he incorporates tonal modalities that are actually reminiscent of fripp, which i really thought was great. this is a can't miss purchase. so excellent is this disck, that i'm now making my way through campilongo's old albums."
