Synopsis

Jerry Jeff Walker had the misfortune of including songs about Texas pride, cowboy hats, wild women, itinerant musicians and desert roads on Scamp in the same year that Lyle Lovett tackled the exact same subjects on his The Road to Ensenada. Walker does a good job of turning these subjects into rousing, upbeat sing-alongs, but his approach can only suffer in comparison to the biting humor and rich irony of Lovett's versions. When Walker shouts that "Down in Texas, life is good!" there are no secrets hidden in the straightforward lyrics and bouncy country-rock formula. And Walker's glowing, sing-song eulogy, "Manny's Hat Song," makes his late friend, the hat-maker, sound like a saint without flaws. --Geoffrey Himes

CD Reviews

Scamp ...... A Must !!
W. G. H. | Downingtown, PA | 03/18/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Jerry Jeff kept me company through college with "Viva Terlingua, A Man Must Carry On, Riding High and Driftin' Way of Life". As the years drifted, so did I, until I recently encoutered "Cowboy Boots and Bathin Suits", it's good to be home! "Boots and Suits" lead me to "Scamp", Jerry Jeff shines, and his music has grown with his experiences. As for the editorial review comparing "Scamp" to Lovett's latest, I don't get it, Lyle is great but Jerry Jeff sings of years of experience and dosen't need the constant wit to sell or connect with his fans."Manny The Hat Man" .... would of loved to have meet him. "Scamp" is a must for Jerry Jeff fans, Great Stories. Thanks Jerry Jeff!"
Toe-Tapping and up-beat music

"This is a fantastic CD. It has catchy songs that make you want to dance and slow songs that make you want to reflect. The more you listen to it the MORE you want to listen to it. I'd also recommend getting "Night After Night", and "Cowboy Boots and Bathin' Suits" to add to your collection. Happy listening Buckaroos!!"
