CD Reviews

Finally on CD after 25 yrs! John Robie-style electro-soul ma

"I'm not overstating it when I say I've literally been waiting for 25 years for this 1983 LP to finally be released on CD - and now May 2008, the wait is finally over! If you know and love C-Bank's seminal 80s electro cut ONE MORE SHOT, you already know and love both singer JENNY BURTON and producer JOHN ROBIE. Now imagine what would happen if C-BANK made an entire album of sublime, complex, stunning electro-soul, and you'll get Burton's criminally ignored, underrated, and sadly underpromoted debut longplayer, IN BLACK AND WHITE. Rather than catering to crossover/radio tastes, Burton & Robie together create an underground club masterpiece that stretches and expands the boundaries of what a producer can do in the studio given free reign. Cut for cut, this CD features a half dozen of perfectly shaped slices of electro-funk with challenging, ground-breaking arrangements by Robie (who collaborated with ARTHUR BAKER on many seminal SOULSONIC FORCE tracks, etc.), from REMEMBER WHAT YOU LIKE, ROCKSTEADY, PLAYERS, VENA CAVA, & more. If you love 80s electro funk/freestyle, do yourself a favor and pick up this CD. Now I just hope Wounded Bird sees fit to re-issue Jenny's other Atlantic mid-80s LPs on CD soon! Neither Burton nor Robie would reach these heights again, but now at least we have this on CD! I guess my "little secret" is now out."
One lost 80's gem!

"It's about time one of her albums at least made it to cd. "Remember what you Like" was one of the ultimate dance classics back in the day. They need to release her other album as well with the track "Bad Habits" on it that came out in 84. Jenny Burton's material along with Norma Jean Wright's stuff as well should've have been available on compact disc for the music fans. I guess record companies are slowly but surely starting to release these old classics."
