Synopsis

Product Description
THE VICTORIAN DANCE is a lively collection of vintage dance music which captures the flavor of the 19th century dance hall - waltzes, polkas, schottisches, quick-steps, mazurkas, marches and more, performed by THE BRASSWORKS BAND under the direction of Frank Beau Davis. It contains music made popular at The Great Dickens Christmas Fair and at the Gaskells Society Victorian Balls. Highlights of the album include six tracks recorded "live" at the Gaskells Ball, French Baroque composer Jean Joseph Mouret's "Rondeau", which has become world famous as the theme music of BBC-TV's "Masterpiece Theatre", plus authentic Civil War music from "The American Brass Band Journal" and lilting Oktoberfest dances from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The rarely recorded "Sir Roger de Coverley" is of particular historical interest to fans and scholars of Charles Dickens. It is the tune the fiddler strikes up in "A Christmas Carol" at Fezziwig's Yuletide party, while the Ghost of Christmas Past forces Ebenezer Scrooge to watch the dancers celebrate Christmas. This album is The Brassworks Band's first release; our second CD, "The Congress of Vienna", can be found in the Classical Music category.
