French soprano Jane Bathori championed the songs of modern French composers, inspiring and premiering many of their works. Born in 1877, she refused to make records until these sessions of 1928-1930. By then her voice had lost some of its freshness. It is amply sufficient, however, to convey the beauty of these songs and her idiomatic interpretations, some with the composer at the keyboard, are well-nigh definitive. Her singing embodies traditional French vocal virtues: elegance, rhythmic and verbal acuity, clarity, and precision. Bathori, who once aspired to be a concert pianist, accompanies herself on most of the songs--quite a feat in those days before multitracking and electronic wizardry. As usual, Marston's transfers are outstanding. This disc is a must for any lover of French art songs. --Dan Davis

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Some may be familiar with this name from the recent Dawn Upshaw recital in Paris given in homage to this now obscure chanteuse. For most Jane Bathori is someone you may have read about at the most, for her recordings were only made grudgingly late in her celebrated career. She is remembered today for the influence she had on composers and singers of her day and to follow. On this recording you may expect jarring sound and a voice that will take a little getting used to -- be not deterred! What follows is a lesson in simplicity and economy of singing that never wavers in a series of French songs that in most cases lack available modern recordings and in each case deserve to be part of the mainstream French repertoire. I could not rate this less than 5/5 because I cannot imagine any lover of French melodies would not be left panting for more.Unfortunately, that's all we'll ever hear of this completely distinctive artist."
