Eastern European musicians have given us some of our most gracious Schubert performances. In this generous collection of early '60s recordings, we hear the excellent Suk Trio in one of its best known recordings, a songful and moving performance of the Schubert Trio, which was issued on several U.S. labels. It still sounds fine, and it's still a highly competitive version, especially with the generous couplings. The playing of the Sonatas also emphasizes their lyrical element, which is always a reasonable way to play Schubert. Because of the variety of music on this disc, it also makes an excellent Schubert listening program. --Leslie Gerber
