CD Reviews

Very clever pop indeed.

"Moses is a veritible one-man Beach Boys. If that doesn't earn someone the tag, "incredible", I don't know what does. "Growing Up Clean In America" is a five song ep of 4-track recordings, and a precursor to a full-length due out sometime in the spring of 2001. The Incredible Moses Leroy has the voice, the tunes, and the chops to blow away most of his peers in the indie rock/pop genre. So why isn't he bigger? I'm really not sure... He should be. If folks like the Rentals can make a dent...On this EP, in the course of about 15 minutes, Moses covers a full spectrum of pop styles and hum-along melodies. He starts with the fuzzy guitars and moogs of "Sour", filling it out with sweet Beach Boys harmonies and a "Doobie Doobie" hook. "Zap" is a groovy little electronic insrtumental number, followed by the accoustic "The 4a". "I Had You" incorporates a "Da Da Da" (ala Trio) keyboard beat with a lazy guitar and vocal melodies. The last track, "Ugly Train", finishes up the ep with another fine bit of fuzz-pop. If this is any indication, Moses should have a long career in front of him. This is fantastic pop for driving, or the soundtrack to the summer. Great for folks who like That Dog, Arlo, Johnny Polonsky, Fountains of Wayne, or the Rentals. Have a listen."
Doobie doobie, doobie doobie doo

"I first heard of Moses Leroy while browsing a Pulse magazine article. Later that night I heard a song of his on late night radio, and was amazed! I went out and bought "growing up clean in america" and was impressed. this is a five song ep that's not quite as good as his full lenth album, but this one features some very poppy tunes, as well as samples from the cartoon "Birdman!" which I always thought would always make a good sample. Also, he's very cute. So pick it up, i think he's the start of something big!"
