A Dream Purchase for Cello Lovers
R. W. | Oregon | 05/06/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This 10 CD set is one of the best music purchases I have ever made. I initially hesitated about purchasing it because I could find no information about whether the music had been remastered, was mono etc. It hasn't been digitally remastered, but the sound is clear and sharp...Rostropovich's glorious cello couldn't be warmer or richer if he were playing in my living room.

Many, maybe most, of the recordings are of live performances, but except for the rare cough and the few seconds of applause at the end, there is nothing to distract me from the music.

Two of the things I most appreciate about this collection:

1. It's an opportunity to hear cello works by composers I'm less familiar with, i.e. Honnegger, Sauguet, Knipper, Vainberg, Mirzoyan, Glazunov, Tishchenko, and Vlasov. (Many of the best known cello works are here as well, i.e. Dvorak, Haydn, Bach, Schumann, Britten.)

2. This collection is a TERRIFIC value. I can't always afford to pay $15-$20 plus for a CD. Here, with one purchase, I have made a substantial addition to my collection of cello music."
