Most longtime fans of Northampton singer Matt Hebert's music will likely not recognize the first few minutes of the new CD, The Deep North. The opener The Sea and The Soul blasts away with a full-on guitar and drum attack - a far cry from the gentle alt-country that dominates Hebert's solo work and his songs with The Ware River Club. Part of shaking things up was Hebert's decision to work with longtime friend and fellow Pioneer Valley icon Jose Ayerve of Spouse, who has gained a stellar reputation as one of the area's most respected engineers and producers, helping craft sonically beautiful works by Winterpills and The Pernice Brothers, among others.
