Synopsis

Album Description
2008 two CD release featuring three albums (plus bonus tracks) by the band leader and his orchestra. Made during the first years of the LP era, the Harry James albums Harry James in Hi-Fi and More Harry James in Hi-Fi comprised some of the greatest hits of the James Orchestra. Among the instrumental figures present on both of the 1955/56 albums were trombonist Juan Tizol (who had made a name for himself as part of the Duke Ellington orchestra) and saxophonist Willie Smith. By the time the LPs were made, both had been playing more than a decade with Harry James. Both albums were best sellers when first issued, and are presented here in their entirety With the addition of four bonus performances that were taken from the More Harry James in Hi-Fi sessions but originally issued on compilation albums. Also added is the complete album Wild About Harry. Lonehill Jazz.

CD Reviews

The Complete Harry James in Hi-Fi
Bt Liknaitzky | Capetown, South Africa | 04/27/2008
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This double CD brings together three of Harry James's best LPs of the 1950s, and the reproduction is magnificent. James is here at the height of his powers, a brilliant, dazzling trumpeter capable of both the most formidable technical pieces and slow, expressive ballads, all played with his instantly recognisable tone. The first CD contains several re-recordings that made Harry famous in the '40s; the second contains the 'Wild about Harry' LP (1957), which is full of some of the best arrangements of the day. This is a CD set to savour. Absolutely indispensable."
ESSENTIAL COLLECTION
SALOON SINGER | 09/04/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This is essential for any James fan who doesn't already have albums from this 1950s period. The sound is great. Personally I preferred the second disc because it's got the hotter, harder numbers."
The Complete Harry James In Hi-Fi

(5 out of 5 stars)

"The recorded sound is great! The collection has many tracks not found on other Harry James CD's. The lush big band sound featuring the smooth trumpet of Harry James can not be beat. Listening does not get any better!"
