This performance of the Grieg Concerto has probably never been out of print since it was first recorded in 1947. It's prime Dinu Lipatti, the great young pianist at the height of his powers, playing familiar music with the kind of attention and insight that make it seem forever fresh. The Chopin Concerto, from one of his last performances in 1950, shows the same pianist, a few months before his death from leukemia, still the poet but sometimes struggling for control. It's almost unbearably poignant to hear. This is, incidentally, not the same recording once issued on LP and falsely attributed to Lipatti; it's really him this time. --Leslie Gerber
