CD Reviews

Green Pajamas - 'Seven Fathoms Down And Falling' (Rubric)
Mike Reed | USA | 02/22/2005
(3 out of 5 stars)

"Not counting compilations and CD singles, this is the bands's 11th effort. I had no idea they'd existed that long of time. Green Pajamas plays decently penned neo-psych that's obviously been somewhat influenced by former Floyd guru Syd Barrett. Noticed some strong pop harmonies along with some nice fuzzy guitar work intact. Some of the better cuts are the dream-like "My Visit With Magpie", "She's Still Bewitching Me", the melodic "Swans And Butterflies" and "Planet Love". Line-up: Jeff Kelly-guitar&vocals, Joe Ross-bass&vocals, Eric Lichter-keyboard&vocals, Karl Wilhelm-drums and Laura Weller-guitar&vocals. Not a bad disc to pull out for a spin now and again."

"Whichever trip you are on this is a fantastic record and it sounds great like the 'Revolver album or 'The White Album' and 'Abby Road' here too. It also sounds as though The Byrds' 'Fifth Dimension was a influence on this album as well. Side one opens with 'Just a breath away' with its 'Revolver-esque bass-lines by the magnificent Joe Ross who can't put a foot wrong throughout this album. Side two breathtaking opener takes us even higher with the cosmic 'Planet Love'. Lots of creativity inmotion here and compositions from non-Kelly songs are just as great such as Eric Lichter's songs ("Anna Day" and "Rainfull of reasons". In direct contrast "Magpie" by Joe Ross is lovely with a cool backwards-guitar ending sounding like "Mr Spaceman" or even "5D" by the Byrds. The stunning 'Bronte Moon' simply soars with Bydian guitars. Other songs are great such as "She's still betwitching me" and the centre piece is a eight minute epic titled 'Seven fathoms down and falling'. The cd has also orchestral music with strings etc. If you are a Green Pajamas fan I urge you to buy this and also check out Jeff Kelly-Melancholy Sun CD as well. A vastly underrated band."
Nothing but winners from the green pajamas.

"the green pajamas 60's psych-pop sensibilites are on fine display throughout this winner cd. the songs are poetic vignettes that hint at the stories within, yet leave things vague for your own imagination to work over as you will. jell kelly's guitarwork is all over the place here, and wonderful as always. another winner from the great green pajamas."
