OW! Too Much Funk!

(5 out of 5 stars)

"This was Larry's last great album of his classic 1970s period, and it is truly a monster! In fact, I believe it rivals the first GCS album in playing, intensity, and ideas. Most people will highly recommend the first GCS album "Graham Central Station," which is unquestionably a masterpiece of bass-oriented black funk-rock. But as a second purchase, I would certainly recommend this album before ANY of his other 1970s releases - "Release Yourself," "Ain't No Bout A Doubt It," "My Radio Sure Sounds Good to Me," or "Mirror." From the opening track "Happy-2-C-U-Agin" (which reminds one of "We've Been Waiting" from the first GCS LP) through the funk-rock ballad "Lead Me On," the album is one explosion of funk and soul after another. His cover of Al Green's "Love & Happiness" is masterful, and the funk tracks are Graham at his funkiest, freakiest, and bassiest! Some might take issue with the final track, which is kind of heavy on the Christian religious themes which can be found throughout all of Larry's albums. But in an age where most of the 1970s funk masters are showing the ill-effects of their extreme lifestyles (that is, those that are still alive), Graham has showed us that his religious vision (Jehovah's Witness, I believe) has allowed him to stay healthy and functional, and he is still funking at full strength into the new millenium. Hell, If this is what the church means, I will proudly convert myself! This album is a funk bass masterpiece."
EARTHQUAKE!!!!!!!!!!!

"If you are a fan of GCS and have the first three albums I suggest you get your hands on this. The first 5 tracks on the album are excellent and easily good enough to merit the purchase. Happy 2 CU a gin' is similar to We've been waiting, Do U Want to Dance is funk nasty, Love city keeps the flow moving leading to arguably the highlights of the album Love and Happiness(Al green cover) in full GCS trademark style, and the monster track; Earthquake. Earthquake has one of the most memorable riffs I've ever heard (be it on guitar or bass)and was so far ahead of its time you can clearly hear how this track must have influenced artists like the Chilli Peppers. Whilst the last tracks do not have the same impact as the opening 5 they are listenable and do not put you off owning the album (although the back of the CD might as it has some of the cheesiest photos possible!) GO AND GET IT AT ANY COST!"
