Synopsis

It's hard to understand how the Coral became a critical and commercial phenomenon while Gorky's remain a footnote in rock history. In the mid-'90s, the Carmarthen teenagers displayed many of the same attributes as the Coral: a faintly alarming eclecticism that usually coalesces into psychedelic folk-rock, a proud disconnection from prevailing trends, and a quirky sense of humor. While their later work is also excellent, collection of early recordings may prove to be their most satisfying set. Rustic disorientation is spattered by the odd splenetic outburst: a cover of Soft Machine's "Why Are We Sleeping?" provides a suitable map of the general territory. But the magic of Gorkys lies also their oddness and unpredictability. So "The Game of Eyes" is a baroque pop classic, roughly resembling "The Monster Mash" covered by Pink Floyd, while "Heart of Kentucky" seeks to graft Krautrock onto country music, and just about gets away with it. Daftness and naivety have rarely been so beguiling. --John Mulvey

Gorky's Forever, mutha****er
Jasper Mcworthy | USA | 12/25/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I totally was turned onto these guys from a friend who found out I was completely obsessed with Belle and Sebastian. They're weird, different, totally unrelenting. I like to think of them as the other side of Super Furry Animals, and if you like SFA as much as me then you'll enjoy these guys as a companion piece. Country Folk, rock and stone age Beatles feelings. Honestly it sounds like music that they would play as background music in kindergarten when people are fingerpainting, it's fun and it's stunning. Be careful while listening you just might learn something. I still can't figure out what language they are speaking but (it's Welsh) I'm getting sick of people singing in English in my music anyway.

(I had to edit this later because the band is welsh and I didn't know that at the time I wrote this.)"
