Best Brazilian Jazz Piano Trio CD of 2004
Murray Resin | Anywhere, USA | 04/04/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Where has this guy been? I'm a serious Brazilian Jazz fan but for some reason, never heard of Glauco Sagebin. Turns out he's the house pianist at Via Brasil, a great restaurant on 46th Street in NYC. Anyway, this guy can play and features a great trio here. It's mostly originals, distinctive and played with enthusiasm, passion and originality. The band really looks up too, with Santi's bass and Paulo's drums a truly organic part of the mix. Check it out!"
Brazilian Flavored Jazz
Grady Harp | Los Angeles, CA United States | 02/13/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Glauco Sagebin is a pianist and composer from Porto Alegre, Brazil whose reputation in his native Brazil is in the field of musical scores for soundtracks. Lucky for us he has joined Santi Debriano, bass, and Paulo Braga, drums to announce his importance in the field of jazz. Few jazz trios are as impressive on their first recorded outing as is this one.

For Sagebin this collection of his music represents a true marriage between American jazz and Brazilian song. And the result is a moody and transporting elegance of soft jazz of a Brazilian hue. He has elected to join with the other members of this choice trio to give a sampling of such composers (other than himself) as Gershwin (`Fascinating Rhythm'), Antonio Carlos Jobim (`Luiza' and `Oiha Maria') and Johnny Mercer (`Laura'). To each song the trio knows how to take the melody and provide those special riffs that carry the tune beyond its original conception, yet never losing respect for the source.

This is soft, comfortable, soothing jazz with that inimitable Brazilian flavor. We can only hope this is the beginning of many such albums. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, February 07

~~ Glauco's Trio is Outstanding ~~

"Glauco is a new name to me, but I got gladly surprised after listening to this great CD of Sagebin's Trio; his style and technique are very pure, clean and skillful; and if on top of that, you throw in the mix someone with the caliber of ex-Jobim bandmember and drummer Paulinho Braga = The result is First Class.

Check out cuts:

5) Earlier Departure / composed by Sagebin

7) Nada Como Ter Amor / by Carlitos Lyra & Vinicius de Moraes

9) Rio Negro / also beautifully composed by Sagebin

and...

10) Pra Dizer Adeus / a classic by Edu Lobo

Pure class from these three superb musicians; listening to examples like this makes me rejoice, because Brazilian Jazz Book has so many wonderful chapters to offer. Enjoy !!!!!!!!!!"
