Synopsis

Product Description
Ghost Town Blues Band s 2010 debut release Dust the Dust not only generated great reviews and consistent airplay, it also won the European Independent Music Award for Best Sound in blues. It didn t take long before singer/bandleader Matt Isbell began writing new songs for a follow-up CD. As a blues trio with Dusty Sikes on bass and Preston McEwen on drums, the band toured extensively in 2010-11 while maintaining their presence on Beale Street. With the recent addition of Chris Dabbo on piano and organ, Isbell has found the sound he s been looking for. Dark Horse is as much a blues recording as it is a celebration of Southern roots music. Isbell handles all guitar duties, including acoustic and electric guitars as well as his own homemade blues box (slide). His vocals throughout the recording demonstrate a singer in complete control of his instrument. Another Lover grabs the listener s attention from the start with its percussive vocal phrasing and the story of a woman who steals all she can from her lover. The band s cover of Rufus Thomas Memphis Train is an exuberant listening experience performed at a faster tempo than the original. Finish What You Started is a swampy groove track with Isbell on harmonica and a vocal delivery reminiscent of singers like Dr. John or Leon Russell. Isbell s not afraid to share his vulnerable side on the title track, a soulful blues rock ballad. The irresistible New Orleans-flavored Meet Me At The Juke Joint (peppered with Carl Wolfe s clarinet) is an instant classic, while Isbell s Memphis Blues is exactly what he says it is. Another gem is Before You Hit The Ground, a reflective lyric supported by inspiring guitar solos. The band s version of the half-century old Messin With The Kid serves up a high energy performance and features special guest Billy Gibson on harmonica. On Good To Be Me, Isbell shares his gratitude of domestic life a refreshing perspective in contrast to the abundance of macho blues available. Considering the solid musicianship of Ghost Town Blues Band, it is no wonder that the CD closes with Real Funky Groove and Biscuit Test, songs that demonstrate the band s versatility, creativity and musical chops. Dark Horse is a triumphant recording and likely to race up the radio charts and win a few new fans along the way.
