Geto Boys Rock!

"Today we all know Bushwick Bill from his charistmatic late Friday night variety show that plays on Christian Broadcasting Network (Bushwick Bill's Gospel Hour - CBN, Friday 11:30pm Eastern). Many of his fans are completely unaware however that, before finding his calling in spreading the Gospel, in the 90s, Bill performed with the Geto Boys, perhaps the liveliest "Hip Hop" group of the era.

While the Geto Boys certainly were criticized for their excessive use of cuss works and racial epithets (come on guys, wouldn't "Trigger Happy African American" gotten the same point across) no one can disagree that they set the standard for all the performers who followed them. It is safe to say that, were it not for the Geto Boys there never would have been a "50 Cent."

In any case, as much as I love their first album, I think that "We Can't Be Stopped" is their strongest work. My kids all agree. It plays continuously in the minivan on the way to school, church, Walmart and the Saturday morning soccer games.

Now that the kids are "tuned in" and "turned on" to the Geto Boys, they are far more receptive to Bushwick Bill's evangelical message. We never miss the show. Our minister even TIVOs it and replays it for our Wednesday evening devotional. Before the church league softball game last week against the loathed Episcopalians, we even serenaded them with the complete verion of "Read My Nikes." It was great.

God Bless Bushwick Bill and the Geto Boys!"

"The Geto Boys (Scarface A.K.A. Brad Jordan, Willie D A.K.A. Willie D & Bushwick Bill A.K.A. Richard Shaw) fourth album was "We Can't Be Stopped" (1991). For today's generation the album cover is oldschool, yet remains enthralling to this day. Bushwick Bill, Hip Hop's only dwarf sits on the stretcher flanked by Scarface and Willie D, in a picture which shows the extent of Bushwick self inflicted gunshot wound. DJ Ready Red, an original uncredited member of the Geto Boys who appeared on early albums has a limited presence on this release. I only came across this release in recent years, the single "Mind Playing Tricks on Me" is a classic Geto Boys track which sampled Isaac Hayes's "Hung Up On My Baby". This track bangs to this day, and influenced many rappers to come. As other reviewers have mentioned this album is full of hardcore lyrics, Bushwick Bill in particular excels at putting the hard in harcore. Production which would be described as minimalist today makes the group's lyrics more evident. Scarface drops deadly verse after verse on "Another ****** In The Morgue", while Houston's Geto Boys diss the police on "Gotta Let Your Nuts Hang". On track's like "**** A War" & "I Ain't with Being Broke" let their anti-war sentiments be known, the later track samples Fred Wesley & The JBs "Damn Right I'ma Somebody". Modern Hip Hop fans should realize by today's standards this album is dated with the exception of track's like the classic "Mind Playing Tricks On Me", chances are high though that many of your favourite MC's were influenced by Pioneers like the Geto Boys. The Geto Boys most recent album was "The Foundation" (2005) which featured excellent track's like the single the "G-Code". As of 2007 Scarface continues to produce (EG 3 tracks on UGK's Underground Kingz) and make guest appearances with a new album to drop via Def Jam in 2008, Willie D is the Director of Sports & Entertainment for Dream Flights Luxury Travel & Bushwick Bill has done the unexpected becoming a Born-Again Christian with a solo album tentatively titled "Testimony of Redemption" to be released in the near future. "We Can't Be Stopped" is an album fans of hardcore/oldschool Hip Hop would want in the collection."

"Mind Playing Tricks On Me blew this album up and it is their most successful album to date. I wish they would have toured more with this because they would be way bigger right now. This is my 4th favorite Geto Boy album and it could easily be number one. The two lead singles off this album were "Mind Plaing Tricks" and "I Ain't Wit Being Broke". But songs like "Chuckie" and "F**k A War" or hood classics.

They had the controversial album over with Bushwick coming from surgery after his suicide attempt. And this honestly gives you an idea of how this album sounds...real gangsta and hard. Solo wise Willie D steals the show on this album with "Homie Don't Play That", "Not A Gentleman", and "Trophy". Scarface wrote one of his best solo songs ever with the song "Another N***a In The Morgue". This would be a good starter album for anyone new to The GB but I promise you won't stop here...Hotep.
