Albany Records, it seems, is the only company with the courage to publish British composer George Lloyd (b. 1913). Lloyd's music has been accused of being too Romantic, too sweet. He is persistently tonal and conservatively modal in all of his works, especially here. The Piano Concerto (1970) is not a virtuoso test bed; instead it's more of a luxurious Rachmaninoff-like romp, simply stated, simply executed. The works that follow are for piano solo. The Lily-Leaf and the Grasshopper (1972) has a Satie-like fragility, The Transformation of that Naked Ape (also 1972) is a more difficult piece--for the soloist, not us. Recommended. --Paul Cook
