Synopsis

Not to be confused with Greatest Funkin' Hits, this disc collects 10 tracks from George Clinton's '80s Capitol solo albums, most of which have been out of print for far too long. Nothing else here dented the charts as hard as "Atomic Dog," but it's fascinating to listen back to how the funk mastermind dealt with changes in the music (not least the growing power of rap). "Do Fries Go with That Shake!?" stands as one of Clinton's finest tail-waggers of this period, while "Last Dance" handily nicks a hook from David Bowie to mock a too-shy club-goer. Throughout, the beats are pumping and the wit and invention never flag, despite the inclusion of "R&B Skeletons in the Closet," whose anti-crossover stance is somewhat dated. Rounding out the package are a vintage Parliament/Funkadelic concert medley and an entertaining one-off side project single. --Rickey Wright

CENSORED = Zero Stars

"At first this looks like a fly collection of tunes from Clinton's solo career, which it would be if it weren't CENSORED. When the record labels don't release multiple versions, "clean", "explicit", etc., it seems reasonable to assume that you will be getting the artists original work, unadultered. Not so in this case, there is the one edition only, and it is censored. Not only that, but unlike a lot of the newer censored discs, its not just a word that's omitted while the music continues: this is just a BEEP that overrides all tracks -- talk about interrupted groove! Of course, that's a minor detail, if record companies feel compelled to put "Explicit Lyrics" labels on those albums with naughty words, then they should feel equally compelled to put a "CENSORED" label for ANY censorship (whether done as lamely as this or more subtley)."
So-so compilation from a funk icon!

"The members of Parliament/Funkadelic worked better collectively than they did individually. Although Clinton, as well as band mate Bootsy Collins, had some success as solo artists, their collaborations with the rest of the funk band created some of the more memorable jams from the 70's.The seminal Clinton opus "Atomic Dog" is represented twice on this disc and it is the only song that isn't stuck in the era of its release. The others are fun for those of us OLD enough to remember them, but for newer audiences, they didn't age well."
1980 was a bad time

"after atomic dog george played out . the songs that came out after that classic jam some were at least worth a liosten if you are a p- fanatic they left out silly mill a meter. which was supposed to be a classic but like i said funk was on life support but that did'nt stop george clinton from funkin all over the place some of these jams were played only twice on radio millions blinked and never noticed. but if you wanna check out the way george and the all stars sounded in 1982, and beyond get this you might some good material on here."
