CD Reviews

THE most under-rated singer in country music history.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"Gene Watson has never gotten the publicity that he richly deserves. The man is simply great. He sings from the heart. He has the ability to really rip you up with a ballad. He can also sing great uptempo stuff. I've got to say that MAN!, can he belt out a note (not for show, but when the situation calls for it). He DEFINITELY will NEVER be played on those vapid country formats of today. Gene Watson has too much soul for today's country radio programmers, who are spineless clones, just like the songs and singers that they they put on their stations. To Gene, Merle, Willie, Waylon, Johnny, Lyle, David Allan Coe, Dwight, Possum, and others: It is a COMPLIMENT to you that you are not played on today's country radio stations. Today's radio program directors wouldn't know talent if it bit them on the foot."

"The hits on this CD cover Gene's best work. Pick the Wildwood Flower is a great story told in the country way while my favourite Paper Rosie written by Dallas Harms has held my attention for as long as it's been released. I listen to it every day and sing it just as often. Farewell Party is one of those timeless classics that no one but Gene can call his own."

"One of the greatest compliments a performer can receive is to have fellow performers want to rerecord his works. Alan Jackson recent tribute to Gene Watson and Farewell Party is just that. Alan does a fine job however, when Gene Watson sings a song you can close your eyes and be there. Making love in the hot afternoon..... I can feel the warm breeze off Bourbon street."
