CD Reviews

May be Gene's Best all-round recording.
Charles A. Cooper | Jacksonville, Florida USA | 04/11/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Ok, I admit it... I'm a Gene Bertoncini fanatic! I really love all of his recordings, but somehow this one is probably his most enjoyable effort for me. The improvisational interplay between three great players in a live setting (on a boat, no less!) is truly amazing. I have never heard piano and guitar work together better than this. This album represents those special, unrepeatable moments that all Jazz afficianados hope to experience when seeking out great artists in small venues. It really did happen here and I am so grateful someone had the foresight to record it! My favorite cut has to be Rachmaninov's "You can't go home". Fantastic!"
A Very Special Live Trio
Jazz Pianist | Milwaukee, WI USA | 04/11/2003

"Beautifully recorded, live aboard the USS Norway in the mid 90's, this joyous, understated, and deeply satisfying music spends a whole bunch of time in my CD player. Very special stuff indeed that manages to only grow richer with repeated hearings. The musical sensibilities of Gene Bertoncini on guitar, Bill Charlap on piano, and Sean Smith on bass blend seamlessly, perfectly here into a splendid organic whole on a great set of standards and originals. This music doesn't shout, but instead quietly gleams and sparkles. If enjoy jazz of great sensitivity, refinement, warmth and beauty--look no further."
