"This 4-track CD is what was known back in the 50s as a "blowin' session": everybody jams on the chords of a tune (usually a standard or a blues) for a prescribed number of choruses; after everone's had a taste, the tune ends. On to the next song. This is a typical blowin' session, with some excellent players involved, which is why it works: along with Gene's tenor there are Idrees Sulieman (tp), Jackie McLean (as), Mal Waldron (p), Kenny Burell (g), Paul Chamber (b) and Art Taylor (d). In other words, the cream of the crop of hard-bop players in NYC at the time. Too much of this kind of thing could get boring, but this is a very nice album."
