Acis & Galatea, a shepherd fable of mystical origin, is based on John Dryden's English translation of Ovid's Metamorphoses. Handel, in collaboration with librettists John Gay, Alexander Pope, and John Dryden, first brought this classic tale to the English stage. Acis & Galatea is considered Handel's most successful work during his lifetime. The fascination Acis & Galatea holds with modern audiences is a testament to Handel's musical invention and adherence to the pure drama of the libretto. Under the direction of Martin Hasslebock (add umlaut-editor), the artistic team provides a clear and luminous setting for Handel's wonderful melodies and recitative. NCA. 2008.
