CD Reviews

Remastered? Dubbed? Remixed? What happened here?

(3 out of 5 stars)

"I rate three stars for the quality of the CD, not for "El Charro", a traditional, exceptional Mexican entertainer. I appreciate that this was recorded long before stereo, but in studio attempts to create a "stereo" sound, remixing or whatever is done, sound is terrible. Instrumental dubs are way too loud and sharp, creating an effect where the music is off balance.

I don't even know if he is still alive, but I can't imagine him approving the "dubbing" or "mixing" of "El Perro Negro", a favorite classic corrido. Well....get this.... they put a dog's barking in the song. It sounds like a monster-size dog with a hoarse throat barking! The barking is louder than the music. How could someone do this to his song? It's horrible!

Accepting the old mono version is o.k. with me, because that sure beats a scratchy LP, but if you can't remix or digitally remaster with quality and precision, then don't do it.

Other than that, there are excellent choices of traditional corridos and "El Charro" with his truly unique voice remains a Mexican legend. My old favorites are here: "Guanajuato", "El Hijo Desobediente", "Gabino Barrera" and "El Moro de Cumpas".

If you like these classic corridos and enjoy "El Charro" you might forgive the remastering, but try another CD with his classic songs. ....MzRizz"
