Synopsis

This is the sixth full-length release from underheard power-pop band the Figgs. The album opens and closes with a theme that invites you to "Step inside, we'll have a good time" and sprawls between Knack-style start-and-stop riffs ("Simon Simone") and Village Green-era Kinks piano rock ("Look At Her (She's Walking Away)"). The scope of 25 tracks (divided, for vinyl-ists, into four sides) allows songwriters Mike Gent and Pete Donnelly to stretch outside the Figgs' usual guitar pop into moody synth-drones ("Attack VCA") and the foreign-language novelty of "Je T'adore" (containing the undeniably catchy chorus rhyme "Un, deux, trois, quatre, gimme some more of that"). Though disc 2 loses momentum by the end, it doesn't detract from the general good-time vibe created by this high-quality rock record. --Ben Heege

CD Reviews

Oh My God! Where did this come from?
Rene M. Passarieu Jr. | Carlsbad, CA | 05/20/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The Figgs are my favorite band, have been for a long time. However, I thought their last album, Slow Charm, was their weakest by far, though still good. Most of the time, when a band releases a weak album, it's all downhill from there, but NOT THIS TIME.Palais is the most accomplished, most interesting, most fun Figgs record to date. There's something for everyone on here, yet it all works together. How many albums go from garage stomp to novelty songs to great pop songs to synthesizer experiments without sounding schizophrenic? The first time through, it sounds a litte weird if you've heard the Figgs before, particularly disc 2. Then the melodies really start to stick in your head. I like all the songs, but one of my favorites is "Look At Her (She's Walking Away)", which sounds to me like a Smiley Smile-era Beach Boys outtake, though Mike Gent, Figgs guitarist and writer of the song, says no. He should know! This album has plenty of 70s style rock n roll too, but with the Figgs own stamp. And "Please Hold On" has to be heard to be believed. Mike Gent does all the vocals, including one that sounds like a sultry female! This thing grows on you like crazy.Anyway, enough of my rambling. If you want a great double album (of which their are few), that has great songs, strong playing, and good production without being overly slick, get this NOW, then go see them live, then get the rest of their catalog, then make them your favorite band like I did. You won't be sorry!"
