CD Reviews

Classic on a Shoestring
tereu | Boston USA | 07/26/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"The Figgs' "For EP Fans Only" is another excellent offering from the best band you've never heard of. The Figgs have been putting out albums for more than ten years, to significant critical acclaim but limited commercial success. "For EP Fans Only" was clearly put together on a shoestring budget, but the Figgs perform up to the challenge, making up for a lack of production resources with their infectious enthusiasm for playing. The strongest tracks on the album, "Waiting for the Sun to Rise" and "Please, One More Time" were both penned by bassist Mike Donnelly, whose inspired and improved songwriting makes up for the departure, since their last album, of former guitarist Guy Lyons. Drummer Pete Hayes' contribution, "To Be Announced" is another standout, along with guitarist Mike Gent's "Right on Their Case". This album demonstrates that real rock and roll is alive, if not prospering, as long as you know where to look for it."
Not just for EP Fans anymore

"Don't worry, it's not just for EP Fans anymore....If you don't know the Figgs, shame on you, but we'll understand if you try to right your wrongs by purchasing this new EP. They've been together for over a decade, been on numerous record labels, big and small, and even from the early albums have proved consistent talents with musical integrity. What we have here are 7 excellent songs. I hate to say that they're catchy because they are more than just that. But, I must say they are catchy. You'll be singing and dancing along after one listen. It's a fact. The first track is a great Pete Donnelly composition, followed right after by Mike Gent's "Excuse the Lame Excuse," in which there is some great great singing. "Please One More Time" comes right after and has a wonderful guitar melody intro. Nice touch. This world needs more guitar! Thank goodness with the Figgs we are getting actual guitar solos which seem to be unheard of in the year 2000, a bass player who doesn't just support the song with bass, but actually PLAYS the bass, and a drummer who is live and on record refreshing and mesmerizing to listen to and watch. All that plus great vocals, lyrics.....My only problem with this is that it's too short....but I am an EP fan, really I am!"

"Too bad! This one deserves it. The Figgs are a class-act power pop trio from Boston that deserve more attention. I have trouble deciding on my favorite album but I'd probably have to go with this one because it was my first. (You never forget your first do you?) Highlights include.... every single song. The songs are instant - just add beer - and undeniable. Bop that head, tap that foot, shake those hips. I only wish it were longer! Rock on boys..."
