CD Reviews

Emma's House Is Empty
KB | Lawrence, KS | 11/15/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Among my favorite releases from the now-legendary Sarah records, The Field Mice's debut LP is a flawless specimen of post-C86 British twee-pop. Effectively synthesizing the more listener friendly elements of then international superstars New Order and the Smiths, the Field Mice present us with eight sublimely melodic tracks (the reissue contains a number of singles previously unavailable on the original LP) each betraying the sort of damaged naivety which seems to so frequently accompany fond memories of times long since past. Wonderfully contemplative and taught, Snowball instantly reminds one of a brisk fall afternoon, clinging desperately to the brilliance and vitality of life at the frontier of change, and while the album remains criminally underrated by critics, it is nonetheless a personal favorite and in my mind deserving of a place of prominence in the collection of any fan of twee music."

"First album by The Field Mice with bonus. Sensitive is still one of the most emotional pieces of indie rock music that I've ever heard. The mix of twangy jangle pop and bellowing tremelo in this song alone is appropriate justification for having dug this group's grave up in the first place."

"Simply the best from the 3 Field Mice remastering editions, it contains one of the greatest songs ever recorded - Emma's house, don't die without hearing it once, please, I'm ashamed that i'd only heard it now (it's from 89). There's no time machines though and the experience of hearing now Emma's house along so many others and this cd is priceless. Worth check out also other Sarah releases like Razorcuts, Brighter, The Orchids. Sarah Records has its own place in musical history, and with this releases it's getting it secured. They deserve it."
