An impressive French symphony

"Ferroud's three-movement symphony is an exciting score, given here is a very creditable performance. I didn't know what to expect -- something post-impressionist in a Poulenc vein perhaps -- but the music here is tough and serious, more reminiscent of Honegger or the later Roussel at their best (with occasional whiffs of Stravinsky's Sacre). Ferroud died young, at 36, in an automobile accident and left only a few major works, so even the French in their wisdom have forgotten him. But a rewarding investigation. I hope some day to hear the String Quartet."
