The Best of the Fantastic Four
The Tower with the Power | The Motor City | 01/19/2007
(5 out of 5 stars)

"As a native Detroiter and baby boomer, I grew up in the era of the Motown Sound. While the "Tempting Temptations", the Miracles, the Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, the Spinners and the Supremes ruled the Motown roost, other groups like the Fantastic Four, at least for one album, gave them a run for their money.

Like my peers, I spent a fair amount of my hard earned dollars buying every 45 and album put out by the major Motown groups. Thank God I had the presence of mind to purchase the "Best of the Fantastic Four" back in 1969.

The songs on this album are some of the most classic love songs you will ever hear. As we used to say, Sweet James and the Fantastic Four can really "blow". The outstanding lyrics, arrangements, leads and harmonies on each of the 11 songs on this album are wonders to behold.

From the famous and prophetic "the Whole World is a Stage" to awesomely sensuous tunes like "I've Got to Have You", "To Share Your Love", and "Goddess of Love", these four brothers set a standard for ballads, pop and love songs that wasn't even approached until the late, great Luther Van Dross came on the scene and literally rewrote the book on these kind of songs.

As I noted, I have the album, but have been looking for a reasonably priced CD to load on my IPOD for the last few months. While I'm huge Fantastic Four Fan, I'm not quite ready to pay $100 plus for a CD.

But, since this album is the only one the Fantastic Four ever made and is a strong Five Star recording, I certainly understand why anyone with a CD has to be paid and paid well to part with it.

I can tell everyone this, this album is so excellent, special and rare, that my copy is not for any price!!!

"Back in 1967-68 when this group had it's greatest hits they were up against the Temptations,Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, the Four Tops, (who were their labelmates later at Motown)as well as others like the Dells,The Delfonics, and the Intruders, this set is very good if your memories of them are strong, otherwise you will be quite unfamiliar with them except for their biggest hit "The whole world is a stage, personally I liked this group a lot but I would have to have a very special memory of them to pay over $50.00 for their music as rare as it is..."
